It IS a penalty if the officials decide it is. That is the very definition of a penalty. They decide on what they see. Why have officials otherwise?

I thought it was quite a difficult one to assess from the angles. I certainly didn’t think it was a complete howler from the ref, and couldn’t tell if the defender kicked the ball or not. It didn’t deviate at all. Not like Burnley goal that was an obvious push, ridiculous that wasn’t overturned.

I think what used to confuse me is the myth that anything is acceptable if you touch the ball.

It's not. You can take the ball and still cause a foul and likewise, taking the ball does not mean it wasn't a foul.

I'm with FCJ and KZ here - the defender made heavy contact with the Fornals without depriving him of possession.

It wasn't a penalty.

But we've been screwed by refs so much over the years I'll take it.

It was a soft penalty but given he did get Fornals legs on the follow through and didn't get enough on the ball to stop Fornals getting to it if he hadn't taken him down (which was shown by the fact that Fornals still got something on the ball as he was falling.) . For me it's a foul and the Newcastle player was a bit reckless sliding in. I can see why it was given and I would have been seething to see us concede that way but I've seen many players win penalties by kicking one of our defenders and dive or even trip themselves up in the box over the years.

The penalty was missed anyway and the rebound scored as Soucek was more switched on than the defence who had a chance there to block or clear. Soucek had the same amount of ground to cover as they did and isn't known for his electric pace.

Good play won the game, not the penalty decision.

I thought it was a clear cut penalty. Still do.

He fouled Fornals without getting much on the ball, if anything. Formals partially skipped above the challenge but it’s a foul all day long.

Who cares anyway. We ran out deserved winners. They'll be in the bottom few all season, fucking rubbish Brucey ball hoofing cloggers.

The pathetically soft penalties given to the TOP SIX every week, which normally get a 'he shouldn't have been making that challenge', and they're up in arms about that yesterday?

It was a stupid challenge, it looked a penalty in real time, I saw loads much worse than that last season. We should have got at least 5 penalties last year that we didn't.

Getting the ball first doesn't mean its not a foul right?
All sorts of reasons for fouls (recklessness etc..). I think it becomes subjective at some point.

I thought it was a pen in real time, but it was a bit soft on replay, IF Murphy got a touch on the ball. I'd be insisting he did if it were one of our players and I wouldn't be happy about it, but it was not a wise challenge. At least Fornals didn't act the cunt with a massive dive and scream like a lot of players would.

For the Sky panel to all rubbish the decision was a bit unfair. It wasn't as clear cut as that IMO. Incomparable to some of Salah's regular acrobatics, for example.

All the pundits are saying it was never a penalty - usually at least someone says it was!

I personally thought it was very soft.... and turned the game in our favour

I'd have been fuming if that was given against us, but all I'm saying is that Murphy's reaction probably made the ref think that is was a penalty if he was unsure about making a decision.

Other way round I’d be saying “that’s a stupid challenge to be making”.

I thought it was a pen.
Got the ball after going through Fornals. Anywhere on the pitch it’s a free kick.

Why Bruce thinks being 300 miles away makes a difference I have no idea. If anything they have an easier job being impartial.

Trundle

really did you see Fornal's reaction - he jumped up in the air...

If that had gone their way would you say it was a Pen?

If it wasn't a penalty, then why did Murphy look so guilty after the challenge? I don't think he helped himself with that reaction.

Re: ⚽ Newcastle v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 2 - 4
As much as it pains me cos I hate that softly spoken gargoyle faced northerner - Bruce - but he was right about the penalty - it was very soft.

We don't seem to be talking about that - but if they'd had a pen for that contact we'd be livid!!!!

I cant imagine Southgate would watch that game because of his Godson to be honest.

However, I do agree that its unlikely Bowen will ever be a regular for England, because of the high profile competition.
